Setting not Stealing the Scene

How do you create a piece that embodies the character of cc-tapis, while staying subtle enough to sit in larger spaces without overpowering them? That question guided the design and development of the flatweave Dhurrie collection.

A Sum Greater Than its Parts

We looked to the ground for well-trodden inspiration. Roman and Byzantine mosaics, still intact, continue to line temples and forums. Known as tesserae, the small pieces of stone, glass, and ceramic form patterns shaped by the natural irregularity of each element.

Tesserae have metaphorical meanings in art, ancient Roman culture, and planetary geology, all linked by small, individual units contributing to a larger structure or pattern.

A Mosaic of Experimentation

Our exploration of weaves, materials and patterns was extensive. We explored rigid to loose stitching structures, fringe details and color gradated into raised details.

Smoothed Final Forms

The first sample took the ideas and refined them into a practical palette that still retained innovative elements.
