Issue No. 2 TASTE

No. 13 Style vs. Taste

Previous image Next image

It’s always been interesting for us to think about the relationship between style and taste. Does one affect the other? Does good taste by default lead to good style? Which is inherent and which is learned?

Style without taste is like a singer without a song. Taste without style is an impossibility—an accident
that never happens.
James Truman
Restauranteur

I define taste as an innate sense that cannot be taught. Simply, you either have it or you don’t. Even then, only other people with taste can identify it. It’s not just about clothing or jewelry or hair or makeup—the accoutrements. It is far more refined than that and requires a certain degree of intellect. Taste is stable and rarely changes, even over long expanses of time. Taste is priceless!
Fern Mallis
Fashion Visionary

I would define taste as a flexible attribute—external, mutable. Style is something you can adapt to different occasions. Like David Bowie, he would reinvent his style whenever he went on tour. We would go see him when we were kids, but each time he was someone new. It’s very much an external factor.
Sean Kelly
Gallerist

Everything in this life is subjective. You can’t have one without the other, your style informs your taste and your taste informs your style. People will judge both—fuck ‘em.

Chef
