Opening Ceremony

Quiet is reverence.
Sigh is desire.
Laughter is a full bank account.
Exhale is taking the stairs.
Inhale is a dab of perfume.
Buzz is a phone in a deep pocket.
Hum is keeping yourself company.
Murmur is help getting that button.
Ping is an “I’m downstairs” text.
Zing is a secret dance behind the dressing-room curtain.
Quiet is reverence.

Kith

The sound of tomorrow:

A door opens and you rush out into the hallway.
Your phone is ringing; it always makes your heart leap.

Your rushing feet press into your sneakers. Your sneakers press into the polished floor.

Before you say “Hello?” there’s a clear rubber­sliding­over­marble squeak. You stop and unzip your jacket, take a deep breath.

You don’t want to be panting when you take the call that
will change your life.

Kitsuné

A fox can try on fifty tee shirts without making a sound.
He creeps around the shiny tables, he pads across the floor, he pauses to listen to a spinning record, he lets his tail brush against a cashmere sweater, he stops to feel a sun patch, he nuzzles a pair of khaki shorts, he reads every tee, he stops you and winks.

“You do it.”

Heel click, heel click. A small thud.
“Watch it, those are suede.”

Denim flops. Linen lands. Cotton falls.
Silk doesn’t make a sound.
